SEWING BECOMES A MEANS TO A
BETTER LIFE FOR LITTLE GIRL
Maha Abouarrage as poor young girl living in war-torn Lebanon, never
dreamed she would leave her small village, move to the United States,
and one day own, Miloʼs Alterations,a successful alteration business
in Phoenix, Arizona.
“The fighting was always right around the corner and you focus more on day to day
of just surviving. Thereʼs not a lot of time for dreaming, even for a young girl,” Maha
But she was always good at sewing, very good. By eleven she was making her own
clothes and by thirteen all her families. Soon neighbors were bringing her their sewing
work and she was earning a small income.
“Sewing became like a beautiful little world to me. Outside in the streets was destruction
and chaos but in my sewing and alteration work I found order and creations and I
started to dream of something bigger and better, a new life.”
Better and more intricate alteration work was offered to her. Soon she was making
suits and one day a good friend asked her to make a wedding dress.
“My first wedding dress gave me goosebumps. For a whole day I just gazed at the glowing fabric just thinking and planning the details
Really I was to scared to start the work. But finally I did and the dress came together
Then, out of the blue, and while she was still young, the opportunity came to move
to America,and Maha jumped at it.
“Iʼll never forget going to the air port and with my one suit case and just standing there
and looking at the big silver air plane. I was over whelmed but giddy with excitement.
It was like a fairy tale come true. I was going to be ride on this beautiful big silver
bird and fly off to some enchanted place called America “It was the happiest day of
my life,” Maha said. I canʼt express how grateful and happy I am to be in the United
States and to be a citizen.”
Once in the United States, she right away found work as a taylor and for twenty years
she worked and saved her money. He burning goal; to one day have a business of her
own. Finally, she had the money.
“ I love Arizona, the climate and sunshine is so wonderful, I had to start my business
here. So I bought Miloʼs and now as a business owner I feel Iʼm really living the American
